Abbey pounce for three points at Pumas
Abbey Lane under 14s moved joint top of the division with a hard-fought but well deserved 2-1 victory at Hillsborough.
Abbey started the game with plenty of attacking intent with strikers Josh Oxley-Adams and Robert Sturman linking up well with wingers Sam Ledger and Matt Megson. At the other end, goalkeeper Bradley Wright was in superb form, controlling his area well. He was called into action on two occasions to keep Hillsborough at bay, first tipping a goalbound header wide at full stretch before diving bravely at the feet of the striker from close range. Ryan Pugh was unlucky not to open the deadlock when his effort from the edge of the area, which looked destined for the net, was headed away with the defender knowing little about how he had managed to clear the effort.
The score remained goalless at the break with Abbey confident of finding the breakthrough in the second half but a long ball over the top on the resumption sent the home striker scampering away to open the scoring. Abbey then looked at sixes and sevens as they struggled to come to terms with the setback but eventually settled again and with 10 minutes remaining, neat passing between Sturman and Megson found Oxley-Adams in the six yard box and he duly slotted home the equaliser.
With renewed vigour, Abbey pressed for the winner and another great through ball sent Oxley-Adams racing into the area but he was pulled to the ground as he rounded the goalkeeper and the ref pointed straight to the spot. With victory in sight, Reece Bennett dragged his spot-kick just wide, although he may feel agreeved that he could not retake it after the windy conditions blew the ball off the spot at the last minute.
With the game heading for a point and Abbey wondering how they had not taken three points from the game, Oxley-Adams worked his magic on the edge of the box, beat two defenders and slammed home the winner from just inside the area to take his goalscoring spree to five goals in four league games. All the players shared the man of the match award, although Brads, Josh, Ryan and Matt all caught the eye. :)
