Abbey unlucky in defeat

Abbey Lane under 14s produced a much improved performance from the previous week's disappointing showing at Stocksbridge but it was not enough to secure all three points.
Abbey suffered an early setback when an opportunist effort from all of 40 yards sailed into the net. However, the home side showed great character to bounce back. Through Josh Oxley-Adams and Robert Sturman, Abbey created a host of first half chances. Oxley-Adams went close twice with fine solo efforts and also saw a header tipped wide by the goalkeeper. Sturman also went close with a rasping effort before Abbey finally drew level. The ball was worked forward to Sturman, 25 yards from goal and he beat a couple of players before lashing the ball past a helpless keeper. Abbey were proving strong in the tackle and impressive with the ball and lively striker Gokturk Demir found the net in the second half only to be harshly judged offside. Against the run of play and with Abbey asking all the questions, Dronfield broke and scored a well worked goal to take the spoils. The defeat was harsh on Abbey, they had done enough for victory but, like most weeks, Abbey simply failed to take their chance or make their possession count. Oxley-Adams was outstanding, but the man of the match awards went to Sturman and Michael Fazakerley.
