High fives for Abbey
Abbey Lane under 14s extended their unbeaten run to five games with a hard-fought 2-2 draw at home to runaway leaders Killamarash Dynamos.
Abbey, who were beaten 5-1 by the table-toppers earlier in the season, got off to the worst possible start, conceding inside 60 seconds but they showed great character to hit back. They were level within five minutes when Josh Oxley-Adams headed home Reece Bennett's floated free-kick. The two linked up again for the second goal when Bennett's long throw was flicked on by Oxley-Adams and Connor Lightfoot pounced in the six yard box to fire his side into the lead. Abbey then missed a golden chance to extend their lead when Nathan Storey, three yards out, somehow managed to hit his own player on the line with the goal gaping after good work by Gokturk Demir. Matt Megson followed up the rebound but his low drove was well saved by the goalkeeper. As so often happens, instead of being 3-1 up at the break, Abbey went into the half-time interval locked at 2-2 as Killamarsh drew level. Both sides then had chances to win the game. Sam Ledger went close with a low drive and Rob Sturman almost won the match for Abbey when his header from Ledger's free-kick went just over. At the other end, Abbey were indebted to outstanding defending from Jack Woodhouse and Michael Fazakerley but three superb saves from Bradley Wright and some heroic tackling from Thomas Elliott kept the league leaders at bay. The team shared the man of the match award but Elliott and Wright took the trophies home. Connor Lightfoot was outstanding up front and both Bennett and Ryan Pugh also caught the eye with great displays in the heart of the midfield.
