MATCH REPORT

Abbey Lane entertained mid table opposition in Killamarsh Dynamos and came away with a well deserved and much needed point to help stear clear of relegation.

The match opened in disasterous fashion for Abbey Lane, going a goal behind on three minutes, where poor defending from a corner gifted the opposition an easy goal. The standard of football was much better than last weeks poor showing against SUJB, but the lads needed to react quickly to fend off another defeat. Abbey Lane had a lot of possession in the first half and threatened the equaliser on many occasions, but the final ball let them down. It took until the 24th minute for Abbey Lane to reply, some great passing saw a ball played forward form the right wing by PETTY, a great ball switched by FURNISS found TERRY racing onto goal, his first attempt saw the keeper get a hand to it , but he buried the ball well at the second attempt to give Abbey Lane a deserved equaliser. With 28 minutes gone Killamarsh took the lead again, a good break down the right saw a shot canon off the cross bar and bounce off the keeper before No17 headed in. The half time whistle blew and the score remained at 2-1 in favour of Killamarsh.

The lads were reminded of the importance of this game and the points we needed so badly, and we needed to play as a team rather than going for personal glory, which had probably cost us a couple of chances in the first half.

The second half kicked off, with Abbey Lane pushing to get the equaliser, but Killamarsh were standing strong in defence to deny the equaliser, and pushed up at every opportunity to try to extend their lead. With eighteen mintes of the second half gone a long range effert beat the Abbey Lane keeper and put the score at 3-1 to killamarsh. The game looked dead and buried from an Abbey Lane point of view as at 2-1 down, we couldn't see where a goal would come from, so at 3-1 it looked a lost cause. With ten minutes left to play Abbey Lane upped the tempo of the game and started to re-produce some of the great passing football we have seen in previous weeks, and on 22minutes they pulled another goal back. A quick change of formation (by my assistant not me) had an instant impact, a great ball played in behind the defence saw TERRY fire on goal, the keeper got a hand to it, but up popped MARPLES-DOUGLAS from no where to plant the ball into the bottom corner. Suddenly the Abbey Lane heads were up, and the team realised they were gaining the upper hand in the last minutes of the game, on 25 minutes Abbey Lane got the equaliser they richly deserved, it was a lucky goal, but it is definately time we had a bit of luck. A good Abbey Lane attack saw a great ball slotted through to the edge of the box for FURNISS to chase, he let rip with a great shot that took a deflection off a defender and totally wrong footed the keeper. When you are in the postion we are at the moment it doesn't matter how it goes in so long as it does. Abbey Lane kept battling for the last five minutes, which from being 3-1 down and looking dead and buried, saw us now chasing to score the winner. The final whistle blew and the game ended 3-3, it was probably a fair result as both teams had shown good possession and played some great football.
Abbey Lane Man of the Match went to NICK HAYES for a battling and very attack minded display from a left back position.

Abbey Lane showed in stages of this game how good they can be, but i would much prefer to be going ahead in a game and stopping ahead, rather than chasing the game. They showed flashes of the football we have witnessed over previous weeks against the top teams, we need to recreate this for the whole match. It looks like it could go down to the wire for the relegation battle unless someone hits a little form over the next couple of weeks, hopefully it will be us.
