Millhouses 1, Abbey Lane 4
Abbey Lane made the perfect start to life in the A Division with a convincing opening-day victory at Millhouses.
The yellow and black wizards romped to a 4-1 success from a one-sided game that should have yielded more goals. They made their intentions clear with a determined start and after several near misses Sam Ledger finished off a great passing move to break the deadlock. Gokturk Demir and Josh Oxley-Adams linked up well before Nathan Storey found Ledger on the right edge of the area. Ledger took one touch before finding the top corner with a fine strike across the keeper. Abbey soon doubled their lead when Oxley-Adams scored from close range and the hosts were left stunned as the visitors went into half-time with a 2-0 lead.
Abbey continued their impressive performance into the second half and they soon increased their advantage. Storey jinked his way into the area and at the third time of asking found the net to make it 3-0. Demir was a constant threat to the back-line and his efforts were rewarded with a simple tap-in after good work down the right.
Millhouses pulled a goal back midway through the second half but Abbey remained on top and should have added to their advantage but failed to make the most of some good goal-scoring chances.
All the team played their part in a great opening day success. As well as the impressive passing and enterprising attacking play, a solid defence laid the foundations for victory. Man of the match was full-back Thomas Knight, who arguably had one of his best ever games in an Abbey Lane shirt. Gokturk's excellent performance earned him the runners-up award. What a great start boys well done
