WATH ST. JAMES v ABBEY LANE - 11/1/09 - TESCO CUP

MATCH REPORT
Abbey Lane U13's travelled to Mexborough to face Wath St. James in the Tesco Cup, and came out on the wrong end of a 4-1 score line.
With a full squad at our disposal, the hard part was who to leave out, only being allowed to use three of the nominated substitutes.
The game kicked off on a sloping pitch, with Wath winning the toss and opting to kick up hill in the first half. Abbey Lane started the game well, but it was obvious from the start the wind was going to make it a difficult match.
The two teams set about the game well, so it was sure to be a well fought battle. Abbey Lane started to push forward more giving Wath a few problems with good use of both wings. With 18 minutes on the clock, Abbey Lane took the lead with an excellent shot from 25 yards out. Abbey Lane were passing the ball well, and midway into the Wath half a ball was played in to PETTY at waist height, he spun and volleyed the ball goal bound, with the keeper getting a hand to it, but the shear pace of the ball saw the ball fly in. That was as good a goal as you will see in junior football. Abbey Lane only kept hold of the lead for four minutes, as on 22 minutes an Abbey Lane move was broken down and the result was a goal to Wath. The remainder of the first half was played out with no more goals, but the game had now took on a more competitive side, with the referee having to intervene a couple of times for minor flash points.
The half time whistle blew, and i told the lads we needed to defend well in the second half, as we were kicking up hill and against the wind, and we would start to tire as the game went on. Once the second half kicked off Abbey Lane had chances to retake the lead, but the Wath keeper was equal to our efforts. Wath scored a further 3 goals on 13mins, 15 mins and 25 mins, that killed off the game, as fatigue had set in for up hill battle. Abbey Lane kept up the battle, and didn't just roll over, they pushed forward and were very unlucky not to have pulled a couple of goals back.
The game finished with a score line of 4-1 to Wath St. James. I would say we probably played the better football of the two teams, but that doesn't always win you games.
Who ever draws Wath in the next round of the Tesc Cup particularly if it is at Wath's home ground need to be on the ball, as they are a very good side with some good individual players.
This could be a blessing in disguise as we have cancelled too many games at the minute due to the cup and bad weather, and don't want to end up piling three or four games in a week at the end of the season. Our main aim this season is to win promotion back to the A Division. It would have been nice to have won and had a chance of winning the cup, but as every loosing manager in the cup would say, "we can now concentrate on the league, as that is our main priority".
