ABBEY LANE v WORKSOP TOWN
SCORE - 2-1
Goal Scorers- EMILY ALLEN, DANIELLE PROCTOR
GIRL OF THE GAME - ABBIE MARSHALL, ZARA KHAN.
Abbey Lane Girls U12's kicked off the 11 A-Side League Season with a home
match against Worksop Town. With only one pre-season friendly under the belt, a 3-2 win Thursday night against Dronfield Town, we knew it wasn't going to be easy to adapt to the full sided game after the teams first season at 7 a-side.
The two teams set about the game a little unsure of positions, but neither team lacked enthusiasm on the ball, both teams were equal to each other and cancelled out each others attacks in numbers. With ten minutes gone Abbey Lane took the lead, a poor goal kick from the Worksop keeper fell to the feet of EM ALLENwho made no mistake burying the ball in the bottom left hand corner. This goal kicked Worksop into touch, as they piled on the pressure, Abbey Lane were struggling to clear the area as the girls required too much time on the ball, this cost the team dearly as on twenty minutes Worksop scored the equaliser. The remainder of the half saw Worksop pushing for a second goal, leaving Abbey Lane defending desperately. The remainder of the first half saw Abbey Lane struggling to clear the ball, and when they had possession, it was like the ball was a hot potatoe, they couldn't wait to get rid of it.
The half time team talk was straight to the point, we need to settle down and play the ball ariund like we know we can, we need to want the ball more and be a little more physical, as we were allowing ourselves to be pushed off the ball too easily.
The second half kicked off, and straight away the girls showed they had listened, they battled well, they were winning the first ball, and we were attacking with pace. Worksop didn't allow their standards to drop and they were here to give a good account of themselves. The two teams were more equal in the second half, and it looked like we would have to settle for a draw. Abbey Lane had other ideas, and started to show more flair going forward, we possibly had five or six chances in the last ten minutes, but couldn't force the ball over the line. With around three minutes remaining, a great run down the right by Robinson saw the ball cut into the box, a panic to clear, and a panic to score saw the ball bouncing all over the place, it finally fell to our new striker DANIELLE PROCTOR to side foot the ball in. Abbey Lane defended well and attacked well for the remainder of the game to keep the scoreline at 2-1. Abbey Lanes Girl of the Game Award went to two players today for great defensive performances, [B]ABBIE MARSHALL and ZARA KHAN.
This was a great game of football by two teams who definately showed they can play football. If i am to be honest, a draw would possibly have been a fair reflection of the game, as two teams constantly cancelled each other out. I can not fault my team for persistance as thay is what created the second and winning goal, they just never give up. This is something the team showed in their first season, and with the four new girls on show today, they have brought some persistance with them, and have settled in well with the rest of the team.
WELL DONE GIRLS, KEEP IT UP!!
