MATCH REPORT

Abbey Lane had an early chance to avenge the poor first match result against Heeley Boys, with the return match this afternoon. Abbey Lane run out 4-3 victors.

With two key players out with illness, and another who declared himself fit at the start of the match with all suffering from the cold/chest infections, it wasn't the the perfect build up to a must win game if we were to regain our pride after the poor showing in the first game of the season.

Abbey Lane started the game very brightly, testing the keeper as early as the first minute. It only took 4 minutesfor the home team to gain the advantage. A great ball played behind the defence saw inform TORPEY race through on goal, with the keeper racing out he cleverly lifted the ball over the keepers head and into the back of the net. Abbey Lane looked good for the lead, but on 8 minutes a needless freekick was awarded to Heeley, and from 20 yards out the ball was smashed into the roof of the net taking the score to 1-1. The lads were determined not to let this put a dent in their game and within a minute of the centre, Abbey Lane took a 2-1 lead with a tremendous goal. The ball was played out wide from the centre, and then quickly played back into the centre midfield, with a quick control and glance at where the keeper was, MILLWARD lobbed the ball high over the keepers head from over 20 yards out. The team deserved the lead, but with only 9 minutes on the clock, how many more goals were to come. Abbey Lane were now playing with great confidence, and Heeley were finding it difficult to get an attack going. Abbey Lane had chances with in the next ten minutes or so to have possibly gone 5 or 6 goals in the lead, but shots were either saved or shot wide. With 22 minutes gone Abbey Lane got a well deserved third goal. It was the strike patrnership of MALLINSON and TORPEY that were causing Heeley all sort of problems with their swift passing and movement. A ball wide on the right saw TORPEY take on two defenders, then unselfishly unleashed a ball across the face of goal, which MALLINSON raced through to side foot home, in true striker style, popping up un-noticed at the back post. The game had totally swung in Abbey Lanes favour and we looked well on for a convincing victory. On 25 minutes Abbey Lane increased their lead, where a great ball through the channels by TRUELOVE fell to TORPEY, who again like his first goal lobbed the advancing keeper to take the score to 4-1. With five minutes of the half remaining a lapse in concentration saw Heeley break through our back four to bring the score to 4-2.

The half time whistle blew, i could only praise the lads for the first half performance, but also make them aware that Heeley had the players to cause us a few problems, we could not let our guard down.

The second half kicked off and Abbey Lane were straight out of the blocks, with two clear cut chances in the first five minutes. Three second half substitutions at half time brough a different dimension to our game, as i have said all along, we have players starting as substitutes that are as good as the ones already on it, so we are not weakening the team at all. Abbey Lane had chance after chance to extend their lead, but on 17 minutes another lapse in concentration saw Heeley pull another goal back making the score a very tense 4-3. Abbey Lane were still having plenty of possession, but were not taking their chances, but Heeley had a couple of great chances in the last ten minutes or so to equalise, but a tremendous save from the Abbey Lane keeper from point blank range saw the keeper drop managing to get a hand to a ball that was already underneath his body, forcing the ball out for a corner.
It was a tense final few minutes, but Abbey Lane hung on for a well deserved victory, and a victory that the result doesn't quite show how much Abbey Lane had dominated the game.

Excellent performance lads, hopefully we should be at full strength for next weeks game against last seasons relegated side Thorncliffe Juniors, which should be a good test of our credentials.
