SCORE
Abbey Lane 0, Handsworth Boys 2
Man of the match
Bradley Wright
Abbey give Handsworth a cup fright
Abbey Lane were handed a daunting cup tie against A Division high-fliers Handsworth Boys but produced an excellent performance.
The game appeared to be heading to extra-time with Abbey producing a valiant display but with just over 10 minutes remaining, an own goal gave Handsworth the breakthrough. An outstanding strike with only a minute to go then sealed the victory.
However, it could have been a different story, with Gokturk Demir twice going close with the score at 0-0. He was first denied by the goalkeeper before an audacious lob from 35 yards, with the goalkeeper stranded, fell agonizingly wide for the home supporters. It looked a goal all the way until the final stages. Abbey were also grateful to goalkeeper and man of the match Bradley Wright for a string of top drawer saves, but despite the setback of conceding an own goal late on, Abbey were delighted to have been more than a match for their A Division visitors and took plenty of heart from the performance. They are now hoping to take that performance into their league games.
