Abbey suffer heavy defeat
Abbey Lane under 14s slipped to a 5-1 defeat on the second day of the season. Abbey were again handed a trip to a relegated A Division side Killamarsh but bouyed by the previous week's draw at Ecclesall, Abbey began in confident mood. They dominated possession for the first 25 minutes but failed to turn their dominance into goals. They also competed well against a strong, physical and direct side but a crazy 10 minute spell before half-time effectively settled the issue. Despite starting strongly and being the better side, Abbey suddenly collapsed and were left reeling at the break, 3-0 down. Key defender Michael Fazakerley was also carried off following a serious-looking injury sustained in the build up to the second goal. However, after wondering how they were not winning at the break, Abbey were keen to come back into the game and narrow the deficit. Their efforts were rewarded when Gokturk Demir confidently stroked home a penalty into the top corner, after Robert Sturman was fouled in the box. Abbey twice had goalbound efforts cleared off the line as they continued to push for another goal but they were hit twice on the break as the game wore on and any hopes of coming back into the game were dashed. However, it was another pleasing and battling performance. Man of the match contenders included Robert Sturman for playing through the pain barrier, strikers Connor Lightfoot and Gokturk Demir for leading the line well and full-back Thomas Knight for another assured performance. However, the battling Corey Ibberson got the nod for a great display.
